You are not unaware. You have been living inside this for months, maybe years. You know the texture of your child&#8217;s anxiety in the dark hours before school. You recognize the particular silence that comes before a depressive episode. You have become an expert in your own child&#8217;s mental health simply by necessity.<\/p>\n<p>This post is not about awareness in the abstract. It is about what May means practically for families in Washington, what Three Rivers will be sharing all month, and one honest thing you can do before May even begins. It is about giving yourself permission to finally make a call you have been putting off, or to take a step you have been afraid might be too much or too soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Mental Health Awareness Month Actually Is<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mental Health Awareness Month was founded in 1949 by Mental Health America, the oldest mental health advocacy organization in the country. It has been observed every May since then, and it is now the most widely recognized mental health observance in the United States. If you have ever seen a green ribbon during May, you have seen the symbol of this month and what it represents.<\/p>\n<p>But why does a whole month matter clinically? Concentrated national attention creates permission. When the whole country is talking about mental health, it becomes slightly easier for one parent to finally make the call they have been putting off. It becomes easier to say out loud that your child is struggling. It becomes easier to believe that reaching out is not weakness or failure, but exactly what you should be doing.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Children&#8217;s Mental Health Awareness Day falls on May 7, a day dedicated specifically to youth mental health within the larger month. It is not a marketing moment. It is a genuine cultural opening. And families like yours deserve to know that it exists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The State of Youth Mental Health in Washington State Right Now<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are the numbers, because sometimes numbers help us understand we are not alone.<\/p>\n<p>One in five children in Washington will experience a mental health condition this year. That is twenty percent of the children in your school, your neighborhood, your family&#8217;s circle. But fewer than half will receive treatment. The gap between those who need help and those who get it is not small. It is enormous. And it is the gap where families like yours have been standing for too long.<\/p>\n<p>Washington ranks among the states with the highest rates of youth mental health need and one of the lowest rates of available providers per capita. We have the need. We do not have enough clinicians to meet it. The Tri-Cities region, where many of our families live, faces specific access challenges common to mid-size cities: longer wait times than urban centers, less community awareness of available programs like WISe and Peer Respite that could actually change everything.<\/p>\n<p>And then there is the timing. April and May are consistently peak stress months for children and families. The school year is ending. Testing happens. Social hierarchies shift. Summer transitions loom. For children managing anxiety, ADHD, depression, or trauma, the end of the school year is like turning up the volume on everything they are already struggling with.<\/p>\n<p>The timing of Mental Health Awareness Month is not accidental. It lands exactly when families most need the reminder that help exists. That it is possible. That someone trained to understand what your child is going through actually exists in the world, and you can call them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Three Rivers Will Be Sharing All Month<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have planned five weeks of content designed for parents who are tired, informed, and often isolated.<\/p>\n<p>Week One begins May 1 and focuses on the signs that a child&#8217;s mental health may need more attention than it is currently getting. We will talk about signs that parents often dismiss as phases, or as something the child will grow out of, or as something that is not quite bad enough to worry about yet. We want you to trust your instinct. If something feels off, it probably is.<\/p>\n<p>Week Two dives deep into childhood anxiety. We will show you how anxiety shows up not just as worry, but in physical symptoms, in school avoidance, in the loops of reassurance seeking that exhaust both parent and child. And on May 10, we will honor mothers and all caregivers on Mother&#8217;s Day, because caregiving is real work and it deserves recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Week Three offers a whole-family mental health check-in guide that includes questions to ask your children and questions to ask yourself. We will talk about caregiver burnout not as a luxury problem, but as a clinical reality that affects your ability to show up for your child. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and we want you to know that.<\/p>\n<p>Week Four is an honest, demystifying guide to what a child&#8217;s first therapy appointment actually looks like. What will happen. How to prepare your child. What progress actually means, and when you should start seeing it. Because the unknown is often scarier than the real thing.<\/p>\n<p>Week Five closes the month by looking ahead to summer and acknowledging the families of veterans on Memorial Day. We want to hold space for all of that at once.<\/p>\n<p>Follow along on Instagram and LinkedIn. Share posts with anyone in your life who might need them. You do not have to say anything when you share. Sometimes the post says it for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One Thing to Do Before May Starts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have been thinking about reaching out to schedule an evaluation or appointment for your child, do it before May begins. Do not wait for the perfect moment or for things to get worse or for your child to ask for help. The first call is always the hardest, and it gets easier the moment you make it.
